Make it Work!

Do any of you watch Project Runway? I have to confess that I love that show! I love the creativity that is involved. I love to see the color, the movement of the designs, the skinniness of the models (okay, maybe not so much on the last one).

Not being a super creative person myself, I can admire the imagination and effort that goes into designing an outfit in only a couple of minutes. I never realized how creative someone who designed clothes would have to be. Not only must you know how to sew, you have to be able to sketch your drawing and then pick a fabric, a color, accents, and even the hair and make-up to pull the whole look together. I'm just in awe of how these people do this!

It is incredibly ironic to see how the designers dress themselves though. Honestly, it looks like every single one of them tries so hard to be unique. It's typical to see the men wearing skinny jeans (My husband is thin and one time he accidentally tried on a pair and all I could say was, "Take them off right now!" ugh!) or capris. A man in capris? Uh, good luck with that.

The other thing that is interesting to me is all the tattoos. I realize that's really prevalent in our society right now, but I just cringe when I see their arms coated in these tattoos.

And the hair. Oh the hair. Let's be honest, I am sooo lazy when it comes to hair, I'm all about convenience. I'm certainly not the most fashion forward (I stole that term from the show--don't I sound cool now?) person you'll meet, but some of this hair is crazy! Christian somehow manages to make one portion of his hair go completely flat while the back constantly looks like he just stuck his finger in a light socket or the wind is blowing only on that small portion of his head. One of the female designers, Kit, has this peroxide blonde, brittle hair and I just cringe when I see it. They showed a picture of her from her high school prom and she was gorgeous! Who knew?

It's kind of reminding me of Picasso. I went to an exhibit of his work while I was in Spain and they showed his early work. He could paint beautiful, true to life images, but that's not what it was about for him. He wanted people to look and question, to search for the meaning. I think that's what these designers are doing. They want you to look past them to see their creations. They are merely the tool to make it happen. It's such a paradox to see someone dressed so kooky design something so elegant.

Don't watch PR, have normal hair, haven't an ounce of creativity, couldn't fit into a pair of skinny jeans if my chubby little life depended on it, BUT have been to Spain. When were you there?

One of the only things I miss about living on campus- free cable. Sadly, I'm not able to watch PR this season- and I'm so bummed about it because I love the show!!

i've never watched...i'm afraid i may become addicted...of course i'd have to watch it with kendall not home or something because he'd give me a look probably, he's not into that sort of stuff:) and i'm okay with that, he wouldn't know skinny jeans from a skinny cow:)

Yiippee for Project Runway!! Our cable doesn't have Project Runway but, I think that will be changing here shortly. My fave was Santino he could imitate Tim Gunn so well. "Get to work people! or Make it work!"

I agree, there is an enormous amount of talent to be had on that show. Too bad I couldn't wake up in the morning, wonder what I was going to wear that day, and then make it.
As Heidi would say, "Auf Wiedersehen"!

Shows that require maximum creativity in miniscule amounts of time ROCK...of course, I've never seen (nor even heard) of this one, but Extreme Home Makeover is still my favorite show on TV (next to Lost and 24). I love watching that show...design and decorating ideas, 7 days to do it, and to top it all off, it's always inspiring! Wish I could watch the one you're talking about...but then again, annorexic and "I'm different!" types kinda bug me, so maybe not...........

Funny, isn't it, because for so many years I WAS the "I'm different" type. Hm. Whoda thunk?

I love to watch that show!!!! I agree with the creativity part of your blog, but where on earth do they find guys that can cross their legs so tightly?! All of us should rejoice that our husbands can't do and don't wanna do skinny jeans or lift their pinkies when sipping their milk. I'm so glad that Sherm isn't creative in that "sense" on the word but he sure does rock with fish!!!

I enjoyed your blog about the feelings we need to express to our kids, and how they need to feel safe when they are around us. I am glad you went up and talked to that dad, despite your feelings of rejection and even more hate that may have occured...let's hope his mom has more patience, and it was a good lesson for not only the other moms there but the kids too!

I hope you don't think I don't appreciate having a maid come and clean my house, like I did yesterday. I see it as such a blessing, and contributing to part of the economy here in El Paso by hiring one....I know that the "working poor" in America is definitley hard....I am glad to know that when she crosses the border to Juarez, where she lives, the dollar value does appreciate and so she can provide better for her family.

Anyway....if only I had cable, I could enjoy your tv show too!

K, Aud, now you have me all worried that you think I'm either not really reading your blog, or that I'm too dense or self-centered to get your point. Really, truly, I'm just one of those people who goes off onto tangents based on what you or your other commenters write. You've probably noticed in my blog that my thoughts on any given topic are all over the spectrum, but they all (sort of) get you back to the basic idea...and that's more or less how I respond to my friends' blogs, so if you want to approve my posts before I post, let me know, and I'll email them first. I don't want anyone getting the wrong idea about me as a person, and I don't want to frustrate you, as I appear to have done...particularly with the demon man post. So, let me know, and I'll keep it focused or send my posts before posting. Sorry I'm so all over the place with my comments!

Love Project Runway. I agree, Christian is a little twit with funny hair, but he's dang talented. I do like Jillian's look. It's a little 80's Flashdance-esque, but she can pull it off.

P.S. in regards to your comment on my post. I'd love to exchange book titles with you. Are you signed up with goodreads? (www.goodreads.com) It's basically like facebook for books. You sign up. Rate the books you've read or are reading and then you can add friends and exchange titles, comments, etc. It's actually really cool and I've really added to my "to read" list. If you sign up let me know, and I'll send you my email so we can be "friends". :)

I'm addicted to PR. Probably because somewhere in my fantasies I want to know how to design clothes. All the designers are so amazing! Jillian is my favorite! Now I will think of you on Wednesday nights as I am sitting alone on the couch all by myself (and Allen is sleeping soundly).
