Let's Get Ready to Ruuuumble!!!

Evil--thy name is wallpaper. I had this great idea to redo my downstairs half-bath. It has some dated wallpaper that was in need of fixing and I thought it would be a great first attempt at home repair. I bought all the chemicals and tools that you're supposed to buy to make the job a breeze. It should've gone according to plan, but it hasn't.
Who are these people who have wallpaper that comes off in large strips? I think that only happens in the movies.

At first, my wallpaper wouldn't come off at all! Then, I got more aggressive and it started coming off in about 1 centimeter segments. There had to be a better way.

Thank you internet. I created a vinegar/water solution and sprayed it on the walls and viola! there goes the wallpaper.

You may be hearing lately about how wallpaper is coming back into fashion. I even thought about putting up some cute wallpaper and matching it to a paint myself. Now, I know. Wallpaper you are evil.

This is my sub-contractor--isn't she cute?

Go Audrey! I'm excited for you to enter the world of home repair. You'll never look at other people's houses the same again. For us it seems like we go in cycles. First the "everything is fine" stage, then the "we can do this all ourselves", then the "why did we ever try this" and finally the "we'll never do this again". It is kind of like childbirth where after a year or so you forget how completely awful pregnancy and childbirth are and actually contemplate doing it all over. Good luck! Wish we were closer to help and share tools. First piec of advice-find someone with lots of tools and become their friend. It will save you a lot of money. Also, people with lots of tools usually know how to use them which is an added benefit.

I remember when we were doing wallpaper in ML we used a product called Jasco. It worked great. Those spatula tools work great to get the little bits off. Just don't gouge the wall. Have fun.

Audrey... good luck! I nearly died scraping the nasty wallpaper in my bathroom. But here is another tip... Score the wallpaper first so that whatever solution you are using can get down to the paste.(You can buy a scoring tool, but I just used an old fork.) I found that some fabric softener mixed with water worked the best for me. And then just scrape and scrape and scrape and scrape. It will be worth it! I promise!

P.S. Your subcontractor is darling. Did she actually help? My kids always think they want to help, but then they only work for about 5 minutes before deciding that helping is really no fun. LOL!

Good work. What color of paint are you thinking of using? Make sure to post an after shot. We recently removed wallpaper from our bathroom and it came off in big strips, but I think that's because it was from the 50's when they made it about as thick as cardboard and thus practically impossible to tear. I'm not sure Heman could have even ripped this wallpaper into pieces.

I can't believe you've decided to work on this 2 months before having a baby! Do you think you'll be done before the baby comes? Can't wait to see how it turns out!!

Wallpaper is such a pain! I remember taking it off in our little kitchen in our old house and it about killed me. I didn't know about the spray you can make though. Good to know! I can't wait to see the "after" picture :)
